Welcome back to a new school year in year 5!

Mrs Shepherd, Mrs Walker and I are excited to start our learning journey together in year 5. We were impressed with all the children during our transition days and we hope they keep up the same enthusiasm and learning attitudes for the whole year. 


On this webpage you will find information about what we are learning this half term, key events, pictures of the children's learning and useful websites to visit.

Amazon Rainforest



In English this half term we will be learning to write a report and a discussion text.



Our first maths focus is Place Value. We will be learning to read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1,000,000 and determine the value of each digit. We will also learn to count forwards or backwards in steps of powers of 10 for any given number up to 1,000,000. We will also be recapping our knowledge of Roman Numerals and learn to read and write numbers in roman numerals up to 1,000 (or M!)



In science this half term we will be learning about living things and their habitats. We will learn to describe the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird and to describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals.

We will be observing and comparing the life cycles of plants and animals in their local environment with other plants and animals around the world (in the rainforest, in the oceans, in desert areas and in prehistoric times), asking pertinent questions and suggesting reasons for similarities and differences.

We will also find out about the work of naturalists and animal behaviourists like David Attenborough and Jane Goodall.

In computing we will be learning word processing with Microsoft Word. We will learn to add and edit images to a word document, know how to use word wrap with images and text and how to change the look of text within a document.  We will also learn to use tables within MS Word to present information and to consider page layout including heading and columns. As well as this we will be focussing on Online Safety. We will gain a greater understanding of the impact that sharing digital content can have and understand how to keep ourselves safe online. 


In geography we will be recapping the seven continents and we will be able to name key countries within those continents. We will also look at settlement and land use, with a focus on areas surrounding the amazon rainforest. We will look at the effect of human land use and some of the different physical and human features of the area. 


In PE we will be swimming for the first term. We will also be learning about the invasion game - Handball. We will learn to pass, move and shoot accurately and consistently. We will also learn to switch fluidly between attack and defence as possession changes and apply a refined understanding of passing and moving as well as an understanding of defensive strategies.


In PSHE our unit will be 'Being Me in My World.' We will learn how to  face new challenges, understand our rights and responsibilities as a citizen of our country, make choices about our own behaviour, understand how an individual’s behaviour can impact on a group and understand how democracy and having a voice benefits the school community and know how to participate in this.


Our French unit will be 'All About Me' where we will learn simple phrases to describe ourselves and have simple conversations. 


In art we will study the work of John Dyer who is one of the most famous artists who has painted in the rainforest as he has explored not only the Amazon in Brazil but the rainforest in Costa Rica and in Borneo. We will be focussing on his use of colour and creating our own work using his as inspiration. 


In RE we will be exploring the question 'why do some people believe God exists?'
